Sammath: Triumph in hatred

30/08/10  ||  Daemonomania

People are always acheiving or suffocating or bouncing on HATRED in metal. Look at what I assume to be before and after pictures of Sammath. Has hatred helped them triumph? It certainly helped them get the guitars out of their faces, improved their fashion sense, and there appears to be a genuine actual real-deal woman in their midst today. All that great stuff, and they only had to explore the blackest regions of xHAYTEx since 1994! Not bad. Guess there is something to unbridled loathing and despising after all.

Sammass are a black metal band to the core, in case you missed every possible clue. And being such they are obligated to play black metal. Note there is a strong thrashy component to their riffs as well as a hint of sweet death. But for the most part these lowland men and their female morale booster are content to blast and screech the night away. I’m slowly coming out of the scroll of the shell used to protect me from BM and bowel movements that dwell across the waters. However the endless machine gun drums (courtesty of Koos Bos) and gremlin impressions still tend to induce boredom.

Despite surprisingly accessible production, good stomping sections, some interesting melodic guitar work, and the occasional blazing solo I just can’t hand Samplesize a great grade. If you wear scary makeup to family gatherings and recently moved from a hollow tree trunk to a castle of skulls “Triumph” just might be to your liking. For me, they burn in the fires of “well, I could be listening to something else instead”. Sure don’t HATE it! Ha ha! Misanthropic wicktory!
